Stimpfel takes fifth in 5k, Cardinals close season at Nationals

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University track and field season came to a close with the final day of the 2022 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. 

The lone Cardinal to compete was CarLee Stimpfel in the men's 5,000-meter run. The Cass City, Mich., native ran to his second All-American finish of the meet with a fifth-place finish in a time of 14:02.97. Stimpfel also took fifth in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday for SVSU. 

The Cardinal men scored eight points at the meet, finishing in a tie for 29th. Pittsburg State won the men's national team title with 70 points. 

For the women, Cheyenne Williamson was scheduled to compete in the high jump but withdrew prior to the competition. Williamson claimed the seventh national title of her career on Friday, running away with the heptathlon. The SVSU women scored 14 points and concluded the competition in a tie for 18th place. West Texas A&M claimed the women's crown with 74 points.
