Dave Bertie was the man who designed the current Saginaw Valley Athletic Training room as well as policies and procedures that are still in place today. Bertie was hired in 1980 as SVSC’s third Head Athletic Trainer, serving in that capacity for 15 years until 1995. He has been a Certified Athletic Trainer for over 20 years and established the Athletic Training Internship program at SVSU. During his time at SVSU, Bertie was responsible for the health care of all 12 athletic teams with only himself and a staff of dedicated Student Athletic Trainers. During his tenure at SVSU Bertie developed working relationships with current Team Physician Dr. Michael Wolohan and many area physicians and health care providers, which continue to be an asset to SVSU Athletics today. Bertie is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education at Saginaw Valley and has been a Physical Education teacher in the Bay City School District since 1996.

Kathy Kinasz was a member of the Saginaw Valley State softball team during the 1989-92 seasons. Kinasz was one of the most dominant pitchers Cardinal Softball has ever seen as she still holds twelve different records at SVSU. She holds career-pitching records for appearances (135), starts (119), victories (88), innings pitched (793.2) and complete games (88). Kinasz is also at the top of many single season records, including appearances (55), starts (53), victories (42), innings pitched (347.2), complete games (41) and earned run average (0.73). She was selected as a First Team NCAA All-American in 1992 after leading the nation in strikeouts (265) and victories (42). After 20 seasons she still ranks in the top-10 in several NCAA single season marks; games (55), innings pitched (347.7), games started (53) and victories (42).

Jason Valenzuela was a member of the SVSU Baseball team from 2000 to 2001. Valenzuela earned All-American honors in 2000 as he recorded a .448 batting average and 86 hits, both Saginaw Valley school records. Valenzuela is also the Cardinal career leader in batting average (.410), while ranking sixth in stolen bases (50). In his two seasons at SVSU, Jason led the Cardinals to back-to-back GLIAC Championships including a school-record 40 wins in 2000 and a Regional Championship game appearance, en route to being selected “Regional Player of the Year.” In 2001, the SVSU Baseball squad compiled a 35-10 record, including a 22-5 GLIAC record and another Regional Championship game appearance.

Steve Zott was a member of the Saginaw Valley State football team from 1976-1979. Zott had much success playing the quarterback position for the Cardinals. Zott excelled in his senior season of 1979 as he earned NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors, as well as the Team MVP award in both 1978 and 1979. He also was selected First Team All-GLIAC in 1979 and was a two- time recipient of the Golden Helmet Award, given to the football player with the highest grade point average. Zott led the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance in school history in 1979. Zott is fourth all-time at SVSU in pass attempts (669), completions (336), yards (4,459), touchdowns (35) and total offense (4,716).
