UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University is proud to announce the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022 inductees.

The Class of 2022 will be inducted on October 28, 2022, at the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet and will be honored the following day at the SVSU football game against Davenport University.

The SVSU Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame committee selected four student-athletes, as well as one inductee each from the categories of student-athlete special inductee, contributor, coach, and team.

The Class of 2022 Inductees:

Tyler Channell, Student-Athlete, Men's Soccer, 2015

  • SVSU all-time leader in points, first all-time in assists, second in goals.
  • Set SVSU records for points, goals, and assists in a season
  • Four consecutive GLIAC Player of the Week awards in 2015
  • 2015 NCAA DII First Team All-American and Midwest Region Player of the Year
  • Four-time All-GLIAC, three-time All-Region, two-time GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year

Sarah Jorgensen Redoute, Student-Athlete, Volleyball, 2009

  • Helped lead the Cardinals to the NCAA DII Midwest Regional Finals for the first time in program history, setting a team record with 25 wins.
  • Set SVSU record for kills with 1,281 and was fifth all-time in digs with 1,188.
  • Ryder Athlete of the Year in 2008, first volleyball athlete to win the award.
  • 2008 NCAA All-American Honorable Mention, AVCA All-Regions First Team
  • Two-time All-GLIAC honoree.

Bob Stephens, Student-Athlete, Men's Golf, 1985

  • Varsity golf team member from 1982-84, member of the SVSU Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame Team from 1984.
  • 1984 NAIA All-American, finishing third individually at the 1984 NAIA National Championship, setting a course record 65 that still stands today as the program record for a lowest 18-hole score.
  • Won the 1984 GLIAC Championship.
  • Three-time NAIA All-District honoree and National Championship qualifier.
  • Turned professional in 1985, PGA of America member for 34 years.
  • Won over 40 PGA Southern Ohio Section and Chapter Events. Qualified for 11 National PGA Championships.

Paul Spencer Peterson II, Student-Athlete, Men's Track & Field, 1983

  • 1980 NAIA All-American in the 10,000-meter run
  • Three-time NAIA All-American in 1982 (Indoor – two-mile run, Outdoor – 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run)
  • Two-time 1982 NCAA DII Outdoor All-American.
  • Over 30 years of experience providing leadership in higher education.
  • Active member of his community and currently is working with the MCC Athletics department serving as a Student Services Specialist.

Eddie Brown, Student-Athlete Special Inductee, Men's Track & Field

  • 10-time National Champion, two-time NCAA Championship MVP. Named an All-American 25 times.
  • Member of the 1982 and 1983 Men's Track and Field NAIA National Championship teams.
  • One of three athletes ever to win a national championship four years in a row NAIA/NCAA.
  • Remains the SVSU record holder in 15 events.
  • Qualified for the USA Olympic Team Trials.
  • A professional athlete in the US and Europe.
  • Lifetime supporter of SVSU athletics and contributor.

Sue Guevara, Athletic Department Contributor

  • Head women's basketball coach at Central Michigan University for 12 seasons, retiring in 2019.
  • Began her coaching career with the softball team at SVSU from 1982-84, winning the GLIAC Coach of the Year award in 1984.
  • Served as an assistant coach with the SVSU women's basketball program and in her final season with the Cardinals in 1983-84, the team won the GLIAC Championship.
  • The Cardinals had a combined record of 98-26 during her four years as an assistant coach, with the team qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament all four years.
  • As a student-athlete, she scored 202 points for the Cardinals in 1974-75.

Randy Awrey, Coach, Football

  • SVSU all-time leader in coaching wins with 63.
  • Led the Cardinals to the NCAA playoffs five times.
  • Won two GLIAC Conference Championships.
  • Led the Cardinals to a perfect regular season in 2003 and finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII.
  • Coached 10 student-athletes that went on to play or work in professional football (NFL, CFL, AFL).
  • Coached four NCAA DII All-Americans and 116 All-GLIAC honorees including 34 on the First Team.

1991 SVSU Men's Bowling Team

  • Won the 1991 U.S. National Collegiate Championship.
  • Started the season ranked 14th and reached No. 6 heading into the National Championships.
  • Set the national record in St. Louis, Missouri for a single-game mark with 1,310, which was the first time the 1,300 team game barrier was accomplished.
  • Won the 1991 Sectional Championship in Indianapolis to qualify for the National Championship.
  • Qualified third for the step ladder finals, knocking off the #1 team in the country along the way.
  • Won the 1991 Sam's Town Intercollegiate Shoot-out tournament
