Stimpfel Wins Regional Title, Cardinal Women Finish 4th

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University cross country teams had an outstanding performance at the 2021 NCAA DII Midwest Regional Meet on Saturday at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Ind.

CarLee Stimpfel won the men's race for the Cardinals, taking the individual Regional Championship, while the SVSU women finished fourth overall as a team, setting the team up in a great position for an at-large bid to the National Championships.

Stimpfel crossed the line in the 10K race in a course-record time of 30:02.6, edging out Grand Valley State University's Tanner Chada as the two finished the race at virtually the same moment.

"Seeing CarLee finish a race like this in first is something that we know he is very capable of," SVSU Cross Country Assistant Coach Evie Kammeyer said. "This gives him the confidence to go out there and do some great things against great competition."

Along with winning the Regional title, Stimpfel was named to the All-Region First Team. Ryan Talbott was named to the All-Region Second Team, finishing the race in 31:22.3 in 25th place.

Thomas Hufton was 38th in a time of 31:44.5, while Nick Bozarth and Seth Schafer were 60th and 85th, respectively. The men were eighth as a team with a score of 209.

The women were led by the All-Region First Team performance of Arianna Wegienka. She crossed the line in 21:29.3 in the 6K race.

Alexa Keiser was 28th with a time of 21:43.5 followed closely by Lauren Buckner in 30th in 21:44.6. Maddie Isola was 46th in 22:02.6 and Jenna Picard finished in 56th in 22:14.2.

"The women raced lights out,," Kammeyer said. "They ran together as a pack and it was really exciting to see them running for each other."

The Cardinals will learn their status for the 2021 NCAA DII Cross Country National Championships when the at-large bids are announced on Monday.
