Men Finish Second, Women Fifth at 2016 GLIAC Championships

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The SVSU men's and women's cross country teams competed Saturday (Oct. 22) in the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships. The event was hosted by Ferris State University at the Katke Golf Course.

SVSU's men, paced by four All-GLIAC performers, ran to its best finish since 2009 with a second place showing. The women landed in fifth place overall behind a pair of all-league performers. On the men's side, they posted 77 points and were 49 points behind winner GVSU. The women finished with 152 points, one behind fourth place Ferris State. GVSU also claimed the women's title, finishing with 35 points. 

Tom Goforth was the top finisher on the men's side, being named the the All-GLIAC First Team after his seventh place finish time of 25:08.7 in the 8K race. Joey Southgate and Eddie Komph finished 12th and 13th in the race, posting times of 25:27.4 and 25:28.8, respectively. Nate Frasier (25:39.7) posted a 16th place finish for the Cardinals. Frasier's time was his personal best for his early career. Southgate, Komph and Frasier all earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors for their performances. 

Parker Eisengruber finished the scoring for SVSU, finishing 29th with his time of 26:18.6.

Taylor Stepanski led the way for the ladies in the 6K event, posting a third place finish with her time of 21:51.0. That finish earned her First Team All-GLIAC honors. Allison Dorr was the next finisher for SVSU, placing 14th overall after crossing the finish line with a mark of 22:28.5. She earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors with the time.

Christina Micale (23:56.5) and Alicia Tomlin (23:58.3) finished 41st and 42nd, respectively for the women while Domonique Adams rounded-out the scoring with her 52nd place finish and a time of 24:16.8.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Saturday, November 5, as the squads will compete in the 2016 Midwest Regional Championships. They will be hosted by the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.
