DETROIT, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program had their final road match of the season as they traveled to Wayne State Saturday evening. The Cardinals (6-19, 3-11 GLIAC) fell in straight sets to the Warriors (13-11, 10-4 GLIAC) with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-13.
Sarah Veale led the offense with 13 kills as Jackie Scheiber was the primary second touch with 25 assists. Veale added seven digs behind Elizabeth Bruschuk's team high nine. The Cardinals were outhit .146 to .340 by the Warriors as Wayne State led in kills 46 to 30. WSU also led defensively with 33 digs to SVSU's 29.
Set One: Saginaw Valley 0, Wayne State 1 (20-25)
The Cardinals took their first big lead with a 5-0 run taking advantage of four attack errors to go ahead 8-5. The Warriors tied the set with a 3-0 run as both teams traded points until the Warriors took a two-point lead with a 5-1 run. SVSU tied the set at 18-18 and 19-19 before a 6-1 run for Wayne State ended the set.
Set Two: Saginaw Valley 0, Wayne State 2 (19-25)
A 3-0 run started the middle set for SVSU before a 7-2 run flipped the advantage for Wayne State. The Warriors extended their lead with a 7-1 run to go ahead 18-11. Saginaw Valley cut into the lead with a 5-0 run as Sedona Coon, Veale, and Scheiber tallied kills to bring the set to 22-18. WSU closed out with three of the final four points to take the 2-0 lead.
Set Three: Saginaw Valley 0, Wayne State 3 (13-25)
The first point of the set went to the Cardinals with a Veale kill and was the only lead for SVSU in the final set. A 5-1 Warrior run took the lead for the final time. Saginaw Valley used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 7-7 as Sage Schumacher had a kill followed by two kills by Veale. An 8-1 run pushed the Warriors ahead 15-8 before a 7-1 run put it out of reach at 23-11. The teams traded points until Wayne State claimed victory.
