CHICAGO – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program travelled to Roosevelt University Friday night. The Cardinals (6-17, 3-9 GLIAC) are on a two-game win streak and haven't lost a set in either after sweeping the Lakers (2-20, 0-11 GLIAC) 3-0 with every set score being 25-23.
SVSU was led by Sarah Veale with her eighth double-double of the season posting 16 kills and 13 digs. The kills led the match while the digs were the Cardinals best. Elizabeth Bruschuk and Natalie Siler split libero duties with Bruschuk tallying eight digs and Siler seven. Makaylah Roberts totaled six kills with Sedona Coon following with five as Jackie Scheiber ran the offense again with 39 assists and four kills as well.
Set One: Saginaw Valley 1, Roosevelt 0 (25-23)
RU took a two-point lead to start but then a 5-1 run for SVSU took the first Cardinal lead 6-4. The Lakers flipped the advantage with a 7-1 run to put them ahead 14-11. The momentum swung back to Saginaw Valley as Roberts and Cola Sisk tallied kills and SVSU took advantage of attack errors, including a Sisk block, to put together a 7-0 run and take a 19-15 lead. Roosevelt tied the set at 20-20 and 21-21 before SVSU scored four of the final six points for the set win.
Set Two: Saginaw Valley 2, Roosevelt 0 (25-23)
The teams traded points to start the set until the first big lead was taken with a 4-1 run by Saginaw Valley including three straight kills by Veale. The Lakers took a two-point lead of their own at 15-13 which was followed by a 6-2 run by the Cardinals to flip the lead again. The set was tied up at 20-20, 21-21, and 22-22 before three of the final four points went to SVSU as Rachel Townsend had back-to-back kills and Ava Decker closed out the set.
Set Three: Saginaw Valley 3, Roosevelt 0 (25-23)
An early lead for Saginaw Valley was wiped away with a 5-1 Laker run to go ahead 7-6. A 5-1 run later on put SVSU ahead and they wouldn't trail for the remainer of the match. They extended their three-point lead with a 6-2 run as Decker tallied two kills along with Coon scoring one to go ahead 22-17. Roosevelt tied the set with a 5-0 run before three of the final four points again went to SVSU with Veale getting the kill in all three points for the set and match victory.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley volleyball heads to No. 12 Grand Valley State (21-1, 10-1 GLIAC) on Friday, November 8. The Cardinals will play their third straight Laker team with the match starting at 6:00 PM EST from the Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Michigan.
