Cardinals Sink Lakers in Straight Sets

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program hosted Lake Superior State Thursday night for Volleyween. The Cardinals (5-17, 2-9 GLIAC) defeated the Lakers (7-15, 2-9 GLIAC) in three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-16.

Saginaw Valley hit .337 as a team with 49 kills and 16 errors on 98 total attacks. They led in digs 47 to 29. Sarah Veale led the match with 13 kills and had nine digs as well. Rachel Townsend and Cola Sisk had nine kills each with Sisk hitting .615 with one error and 13 attacks. Leading in hitting percentage was Makaylah Roberts with eight kills and one error on 11 attacks as she hit .636. Elizabeth Bruschuk led the Cardinals in digs with 13, one behind the match leader in Jordyn Haller for the Lakers. The offense ran through Jackie Scheiber who had 38 assists, five digs, and four kills.

Set One: Saginaw Valley 1, Lake Superior State 0 (25-16)

The first set had the only lead changes in the match. Lake Superior State took a 1-0 lead as the teams traded points and one-point leads. A 7-1 run for SVSU broke open the set and put them ahead 14-9. Beale tallied three kills I the run with Scheiber, Sisk and Roberts earning one as well. Saginaw Valley slowly extended their lead until two kills by Sisk out of the last three points ended the set.

Set Two: Saginaw Valley 2, Lake Superior State 0 (25-15)

Saginaw Valley would not trail throughout the rest of the match as they started the second set with a 5-2 run ending with kills by Townsend and Sage Schumacher. A 5-1 run extended the lead to 10-4 before a 6-1 run for SVSU pushed the set out of hand. The Lakers dug back a bit with a 4-1 run to make it 18-13, but the Cardinals had runs of 4-0 and 3-0 including a set winning kill by Alena Whittaker to go ahead 2-0.

Set Three: Saginaw Valley 3, Lake Superior State 0 (25-16)

SVSU kept riding the momentum jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the final set. A 4-1 run with Sisk, Townsend, and Schumacher earning kills along with a Peyton Bartnikowski ace gave the Cardinals a 10-4 lead. LSSU battled and brought the set to within two as Saginaw Valley led 17-15, but an 8-1 run with kills by Scheiber, Roberts, Veale and an ace by Schumacher and Scheiber claimed the set and match for the Cardinals.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley has a quick turn around as they head to Chicago tomorrow (November 1). The Cardinals face off against Roosevelt (2-18, 0-10 GLIAC) at 7:00 PM EST from Goodman Center.
