Volleyball Falls in Three to Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program continued GLIAC play at Davenport Saturday evening. The Cardinals (3-13, 1-7 GLIAC) fell 3-0 to the Panthers (6-11, 4-5 GLIAC) with scores of 25-22, 25-15, and 25-22.

SVSU was led by Sarah Veale offensively with 12 kills and 12 kills for her sixth double-double of the season. Sedona Coon also had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Ava Beard and Jackie Scheiber shared the second touch again as Beard had 14 assists and Scheiber had 12. Both finished with .500 hitting as Beard had two kills on four attacks and Scheiber one kill on two attacks. Natalie Siler and Cola Sisk also aided the defense with eight digs and seven digs respectively.

Set One: A fast start for Davenport put them ahead 7-3 with a 4-0 run. SVSU strung multiple small runs together with two 3-0 runs and two 2-0 runs in the middle portion of the set as they tied it 18-18. Veale tallied two kills of the last four as Coon and Sage Schumacher got the others as the Cardinals took a one-point lead. The Panthers responded with a 4-0 run to win the set.

Set Two: Saginaw Valley took the early lead before a 6-1 run for Davenport put them ahead 8-4. An 8-0 run followed as they pushed their lead to 11. The Cardinals answered with a 5-0 run as Beard recorded back-to-back aces and Veale and Makaylah Roberts recorded a kill each cutting the lead to 19-12. Both teams traded points over the next six before a DU 3-0 run gave the Panthers a 2-0 set advantage.

Set Three: SVSU came out with some momentum going up 2-0 and using a 6-1 run to go ahead 9-6. Davenport flipped the script with a 7-1 run to take a 13-10 edge. Saginaw Valley kept the set close bringing it within one-point multiple times before a late 4-0 run with Veale and Coon tallying kills put the Cardinals up 21-20. However, Davenport closed out with five of the last six points to win the match.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley volleyball heads to the Midwest Region Crossover next weekend on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19. Their opponents and match times have not been announced.
