BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program faced their highest ranked opponent Friday evening in No. 4 Ferris State. The Cardinals (3-12, 1-6 GLIAC) fell in three sets to none to the Bulldogs (15-0, 7-0 GLIAC) with scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-12.
SVSU was led offensively by Sedona Coon with 13 kills and she added six digs as well. Cola Sisk had the best night hitting percentage wise with six kills, two errors, on 12 attacks for a hitting percentage of .333. Sarah Veale led defensively with eight digs while Ava Beard and Jackie Scheiber split the match as the setters. Beard posted 17 assists while Scheiber had 11.
Set One: SVSU lost the first point but responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead with back-to-back kills by Coon. The Bulldogs retaliated with an 9-2 run to take a 10-6 advantage. SVSU got a pair of kills from Veale to dig back to within two, but the Ferris State offense used a 6-1 run to push their lead to seven. They ended the set with a 5-1 run to win by nine.
Set Two: Another strong start for Saginaw Valley with a 4-0 run and a 3-0 run including back-to-back aces by Elizabeth Bruschuk to take an early 8-3 lead. They held onto that lead until a 7-1 run flipped it for Ferris State and put the Bulldogs ahead 14-12. The swing continued with a 4-0 Cardinal run to make it 17-15 SVSU as Makaylah Roberts and Coon teamed up for a kill each. However, a 6-0 run for FSU gave them a four-point edge they wouldn't give up.
Set Three: The final set showcased the highly ranked offense of Ferris State. After trading points between the two teams, the Bulldogs took a firm grasp of the lead with a 9-0 run to go up 15-5. The Cardinals cut into the lead with three straight points but the FSU offense was too much. A 3-1 run followed by a 6-1 run closed out the set and the match.
