MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team won the second set 25-23 in a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-14) loss at Northern Michigan on Friday night. The Cardinals (3-10, 1-4 GLIAC) hit .375 as a team in set two to tie the set score against the Wildcats (8-4, 4-1 GLIAC).
Sarah Veale had a fantastic match with a 15-kill, 18-dig double-double on the evening. It is Veale's third-consecutive match with a double-double and the fourth of the year. Cola Sisk finished with eight kills, Sedona Coon tallied seven, and Sage Schumacher had six along with a team-high three solo blocks. Ava Beard registered her first double-double of the year with 34 assists and 10 digs. Coon helped defensively with 15 digs while Natalie Siler had nine digs and three assists.
Set One: The Wildcats started with a 6-1 lead in the first set before SVSU battled back to cut the deficit to one point with a 4-0 run. Sisk registered two kills in the Cardinals' first five points as the score tightened to a tie at seven points early. NMU scored in bunches to build a 22-14 lead before closing out the first frame with a 25-16 decision.
Set Two: Back-to-back kills by Veale gave Saginaw Valley an early 2-0 lead and the Cardinals used that momentum to build a 13-8 advantage. A 6-0 run by the Wildcats tied the set at 18 before they used another 4-0 run to pull ahead 22-19. Coon had two kills and Sisk added a third to tie things at 22. Schumacher tied things at 23 with a kill before two more points were given to SVSU as they took set 2 and tied the match with the 25-23 win.
Set Three: The Cardinals kept things interesting in the third set after NMU hopped out to a 5-1 lead early. Beard recorded a service ace and Veale had two kills in a 5-0 run that gave SVSU a 15-13 edge. The Wildcats flipped the advantage to 17-15 and the Cardinals battled to keep it close but couldn't close out a second set as NMU earned the 25-21 victory for the 2-1 lead.
Set Four: Two 4-0 runs by Northern Michigan built a 9-3 lead before the Wildcats built the largest scoring gap of 18-7 off five straight points. Veale, Sisk, and Schumacher had kills as the Cardinals took five of six points to snip the lead to 18-13. NMU scored seven of the final eight points for a 25-14 win and ended the match in four sets.
