HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball program wrapped up their final road trip of the season against the Michigan Tech Huskies. SVSU fell in three sets losing 25-14, 25-23, and 26-24.
Madison Thompson led the team with 13 kills with Makaylah Roberts tallying seven on her 11 attacks hitting .545. Kelsey Vittitow led the team with 14 digs with Sedona Coon also hitting double digits with 11. Ava Beard set up the offense with 25 assists.
Michigan Tech took a 7-1 lead with a 5-0 run early on and pulled away quickly. A 9-0 run following put the Huskies ahead 16-2 in set one. The Cardinals cut into the lead with two 3-0 runs to make it 17-8, but a 3-0 run turned the momentum back for Michigan Tech. They closed out the set as both teams scored 2-0 runs and traded the final two points.
SVSU took a 2-0 lead to start the second set, but a 4-0 run took the lead back for MTU. The Cardinals tied the set at 10-10 with a 4-0 run led by two kills by Roberts. A 3-0 run put Michigan Tech back in front 14-11 before both teams traded 2-0 runs. The Cardinals took the advantage with a 3-0 run with two kills by Coon to go up 21-20. The set tied at 23-23 before a 2-0 run for Michigan Tech closed it out for the two-set advantage.
The final set was another close battle. A 4-0 run by SVSU with kills by Thompson and Sage Schumacher put them up 4-1. The next 10 points split between both teams and Saginaw Valley held the 11-8 lead. A 2-0 run for the Huskies cut the Cardinal lead to one and the two teams traded points again over the next 11 to make it 17-15 SVSU. A 2-0 and 3-0 run for MTU gave them a two-point lead 20-18 before the Cardinals tied the set at 21-21, 23-23, and 24-24. The Huskies closed out the next two points for the set and match win.
Saginaw Valley volleyball heads back home to wrap up the season. They host Davenport University on Friday at 7:00 PM and Purdue Northwest on Saturday, November 11 for senior day at 2:00 PM.
