Volleyball Drops Second Game of Road Trip to Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program had a scare on Halloween falling in straight sets to Wayne State Tuesday night with scores of 25-13, 26-24, and 25-15. The Cardinal attack was good in the second set, but the Warrior defense outplayed them in the first and third.

SVSU was led by Sage Schumacher and Sarah Veale offensively with eight kills each. Sedona Coon followed up with seven. The offense ran through Ava Beard who had 22 assists. Kelsey Vittitow and Coon both had ten kills on the defensive side.

The Cardinals started set one with a 3-1 lead, but a 4-0 run flipped the set for Wayne State as SVSU never caught back up. Another 4-0 run was split by a Cardinal timeout as WSU went up 12-6. Kills trickled in by Veale, Schumacher, and one by McKenna Sovis were not enough for the Cardinals in the first set as two 3-0 runs and a 2-0 run closed it out for the Warriors.

Another early lead for the Cardinals in set two as they took advantage of two straight attacking errors by Wayne State to go up 4-2. The set became a story of runs back and forth. The Warriors took a two-or-three-point lead, then the Cardinals answered back with a run to tie it up. First at 5-5, then 10-10, then 14-14 before SVSU took a one-point lead with a Nicole Sisk kill. WSU took the lead by one before SVSU had a 3-0 run with two Veale kills to take an 18-16 lead. The set tied back up at 23-23 and 24-24 before the final two points went to the Warriors for the two-set advantage.

Wayne State came out hot in the third set with a 5-0 lead, the first big advantage early in a set for either team. They continued to rope together runs of two or three and extended their lead. A 3-0 run for SVSU brought it back to 16-10, but that was the closest the Cardinals got in the final set falling 25-15.

After the loss, SVSU gets ready for the final road trip of the regular season. They head to the Upper Peninsula this weekend to play Northern Michigan on Friday, November 3 at 6:30 PM before playing the Huskies of Michigan Tech on Saturday, November 4 at 3:00 PM.
