KENOSHA, Wis. – After a sweep of Lake Superior State the day before, the Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program was swept by Parkside on Saturday. The Rangers won the sets 25-18, 25-20, and 25-18.
Saginaw Valley got offensive output from a number of players and were led by Madison Thompson's six kills. Sarah Veale, Sage Schumacher, and Nicole Sisk had three kills along with Makaylah Roberts, McKenna Sovis, Karissa Ferry, and Kendall Ihm's two kills. Kelsey Vittitow led defensively with 14 digs and the team had 14 block assists. Schumacher had five with three for Sovis and two for both Ferry and Ihm.
UWP took a quick 4-1 lead with a 3-0 run in the first set before a 3-0 run for SVSU tied it up taking advantage of three straight attack errors by the Rangers. Parkside started to run off in the first set with a 5-0 run and a 3-0 run as the Cardinals chipped away with one-to-two points at a time. The lead was pushed to eight as Parkside led 22-14 before trading points and claiming the first set.
A similar story for set two as the Rangers got a short lead and slowly extended it by taking a point or two more than Saginaw Valley at a time. After a 12-5 lead for UWP, the Cardinals had a 4-0 run with a kill by Thompson and an ace for Ihm. A 3-0 and 2-0 run later in the set brought the set within one with an ace by Veale and a kill for Ihm and three attack errors by Parkside. The Rangers took five of the next six points to claim set two 25-20.
The Cardinals took an early 3-1 lead with a kill by Roberts and Sisk and an ace by Sovis in set three. The teams traded blows until the set was 6-6 and Parkside took the lead with a 3-0 and 2-0 run. That was when UWP pushed ahead. A 6-0 run put them up 17-9 and the Cardinals took five of six points with back-to-back aces by Sedona Coon to bring the set within four, but three 2-0 runs for Parkside claimed the set and the match.
After the late trip to Wisconsin, Cardinal volleyball heads to Wayne State Tuesday, October 31 for a Halloween match against the Warriors at 7:00 PM.
