Cardinal Volleyball Hits Snag in Road Trip

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal volleyball team picked up the road trip Friday evening at Grand Valley State University. The Lakers defeated the Cardinals 3-0 winning the sets 25-16, 25-15, and 25-23.

Sarah Veale led SVSU offensively with nine kills over 27 total attacks and had a hitting percentage of .259. She also had 15 digs for her third double-double of the year. Madison Thompson had seven kills and Makaylah Roberts had four on nine attacks for a hitting percentage of .333. McKenna Sovis was perfect on her two attacks totaling two kills.

Grand Valley jumped ahead in set one and took a bigger lead with a 5-0 run that made it 8-2. SVSU kept the lead around the five-to-eight-point range with multiple 2-0 runs and a 4-0 run late taking advantage of two attack errors and a block by Madison Smith. However, The GVSU lead was 21-16 and they took the final four points to win the first set.

Set two started with a Cardinal lead with a kill by Roberts, but the next two points went the Lakers way and they wouldn't trail the rest of the way. SVSU tied the set up multiple times early as the two teams traded blows, but a 5-0 run for Grand Valley gave them a 15-8 lead. Another 5-0 run for the Lakers gave them prime position to take a 2-0 lead on the match. Roberts and Sovis got back-to-back kills at the end of the set, but the next point sealed it for GVSU.

The third set showed a resounding push back by Saginaw Valley. GVSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead early with a 4-0 run, but a 5-0 run later on for SVSU tied the set at 13-13. The Cardinals and Lakers traded 3-0 runs to tie it at 16-16 again before Grand Valley would take the lead. Up 23-19 over Saginaw Valley, the Cardinals had a 4-0 run courtesy of three straight aces by Elizabeth Bruschuk to tie it at 23-23 before the final two points went the Lakers way and the set and match were in the hands of Grand Valley.

Cardinal volleyball is back on the road as they take on the Bulldogs Saturday evening. Start time for set one is at 5:00 PM.
