Cardinals Fall to Bulldogs on Senior Night

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team was defeated by the Ferris State University Bulldogs today (11/2), 3-0. The Cardinals fall to 15-9 on the season and 13-4 in the GLIAC, while the #12 Bulldogs improve to 22-2 overall and 16-1 in the conference.

The contest was preceeded by a Senior Night recognition ceremony for the six seniors on the SVSU Volleyball team. These seniors have helped make the SVSU Volleyball program one of the top programs in the GLIAC. Read senior night transcript here

The Cardinals fell behind early and lost the first set 25-15. SVSU trailed 18-13 midway through the second game but came back to tie up the score at 22-22. However, the Bulldogs won the last three points of the set to take a 2-0 lead. Saginaw Valley was unable to mount a comeback as they battled tough in the third set but ultimately fell by a 25-21 decision as Ferris State won the match 3-0.

The Cardinals were led by senior libero Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) who earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with a team-high 16 digs and one assist on Senior Night. Senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) posted 15 kills and eight digs, while Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) had seven kills and two blocks on the evening. Junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) finished the match with 33 assists, three kills and four digs, while senior Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich./Northwood University) added five kills. Junior Julia Thomas (Novi, Mich.) recorded ten digs in the loss.

The Cardinals are currently in second place in the GLIAC North and third overall with the GLIAC Volleyball Tournament just one week away.

Saginaw Valley will finish out the regular season conference schedule when they travel to Northwood on Saturday at 4:00 pm and Lake Superior State on Sunday for a 2:00 match.
