4x400 School Record Falls, Marks Improve at Hillsdale Classic

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Hillsdale Classic Last Chance Meet today (May 8).  

Women

The 4x400 meter relay team of Ola Hendler (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge HS), Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich.), Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) and Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) took first place, breaking the school record with a NCAA provisional time of 3:45.53.  The old mark of 3:47.79 was set 24 years ago in 1989.

Sophomore Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) moved up the national list with a NCAA Provisional throw of 14.00 meters to win the shot put, while Anna Fochesato (Holly, Mich. / Brandon HS) won the high jump with a NCAA Provisional leap of 1.69 meters.  

Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich.) also placed first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:37.      

Men

Senior David Ray (Lansing, Mich. / Eastern HS) took first place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.40. Ray is currently 17th on the national list.

Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich. / Sterling Heights HS) placed second and moved up on the national list with a jump of 2.03 meters in the high jump. 

Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) placed third in the 800 meter run with a NCAA provisional time of 1:50.55, currently the 11th best time this season. Teammate Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich.) finished the race in fourth place in a time of 1:51.08.

Members of the SVSU track and field programs will be back in action on Friday (May 10) when they travel to Grand Valley State University for another Last Chance Meet.  

The NCAA will release the final list of qualifiers on Sunday (May 12) for the National meet that will be held in Pueblo, Colo. on May 23-25.
