Bischer, Stepanski Compete on Day One at GLIACs

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field squads began their week at the 2013Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships today (May 1).

Day One at GLIACs featured the first day of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon.

Senior Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.) finished the first day of competition with 3,510 points atop the decathlon standings after five events. Tyler sits 41 points ahead of Lake Superior State's Kaleb Schweiger in second position.

Grob earned top honors in the shot put after a mark of 41-feet-4 1/4 inches, while posting a runner-up finish in the 400 meter dash crossing the line in 50 seconds flat.

Tyler also notched a second place showing in the 100 meter dash after clocking in at 11.34 seconds and a fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet-4 1/4 inches. 

On the women's side, Sidney Bischer (Avoca, Mich. / Yale) and Paige Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) sit in ninth and 10th positions, respectively, after the first day of the heptathlon.

Bischer's top finishes came in the 200 meter and high jump competitions where she took seventh place in each event.

Paige Stepanski's top showing of the day was a 10th place finish in the high jump.

These three SVSU student-athletes will be back in action again tomorrow along with a host of other Cardinals for day two of the 2013 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
