Cardinals Earn Three Provisional Marks and a School Record at GVSU Outdoor Dual

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams battled Grand Valley State University in an outdoor dual meet between the two rival institutions.

The Lady Cardinals earned two provisional qualifying marks, including a school record, while the men notched one NCAA provo time.

Women - No. 4 Grand Valley 107, Saginaw Valley 47

Sophomore Emily Short (Tawas, Mich. / Tawas Area) continued her success from the indoor season into the outdoor schedule with a school record breaking performance in the 3000 meter distance race. Short's mark of 9:57.70 broke a 23-year-old record held by Becky Duda (9:59.74 - 1990) as well as a GVSU Stadium record that she set one year ago.

Senior Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich.) took the top prize in the 1500 meter run with an NCAA D2 Provisional Qualifying time of 4:32.93 in the first outdoor meet of the season. Meyer also finished second in the 800 meter.

Saginaw native Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) fell two feet shy of a new SVSU school record as she earned a NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying mark of 165-feet-1 inch in the hammer throw. Joiner also finished second in the shot put.

The 400 meter relay team of Elizabeth Sampson (Willis, Mich. / Lincoln), Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich.), Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Kimberly Balls (Bridgeport, Mich.) finished in first place with a time of 48.67 seconds. 

Men - No. 11 Grand Valley 118, Saginaw Valley 41

Senior hurdler David Ray (Lansing, Mich. / Eastern) led the SVSU men with a NCAA DII Provisional Qualifying time of 14.60 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles. Ray was the lone top finisher for the men's team.

The 400 and 1600 meter relay squads both recorded runner-up finishes. The 400 meter relay team consisting of Ricky Griffin (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), Darell Myree (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin), D'Omar Boyden (Portmore, Jamaica) and David Ray clocked in at 43.91, while the 1600 meter team of Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich.), Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.), Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) and Josh Simmons (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) posted a mark of 3:23.76.

The Cardinals will be back in outdoor action next Saturday (April 6) in East Lansing for the MSU Spartan Invitational.
