SVSU Track & Field Gives Back at Bay-Arenac ISD Living and Learning Center

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Members of the Saginaw Valley State University track and field team celebrated 'March is Reading Month' by spending a morning with students at the Bay-Arenac ISD Living and Learning Center on Friday, March 22nd.

A total of 28 Cardinal track and field student-athletes participated in the event as part of SVSU Athletics' ever growing initiative to make a positive impact on the community. This is second consecutive season the SVSU track and field student-athletes have participated at the Bay-Arenac ISD Living and Learning Center.

The morning included many different activities as the Cardinal student-athletes led group reading sessions with the class, participated in one-on-one readings with the students and helped out with arts and crafts projects.

"It's incredible how a couple hours of my day can make their entire day," said freshman student-athlete David Jensen. "It's a great feeling knowing you made someone's day or even being there for a person."

The goal at Bay-Arenac ISD Living and Learning Center is for the students to become participating members of their community to the best of their abilities. To reach this goal the students work to transition by following a curriculum that includes functional academics, leisure, recreation, independent living, and community-based experiences.

"I really enjoyed spending some time with the students at the ISD in Bay City," said freshman SVSU student-athlete Andrew Plude. "It gave me a real appreciation for everything I have and it shows that giving a little often returns more than we expected."

The Bay-Arenac ISD Living and Learning Center campus is located at 1435 W. Center Road in Hampton Township.
