Short Breaks 3,000 Meter School Record at Hoosier Hills Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the two-day Hoosier Hills Open at Indiana University on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 8-9).

Women

Sophomore Emily Short (Tawas, Mich. / Tawas Area HS) finished in sixth place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:51.98 to set a new SVSU school record. The previous record of 9:53.08 was set by Becky Duda 21 years ago. Short's time was also an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying mark that currently ranks 15th in the country.

Junior Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich.) finished sixth in the 400 meter dash with an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying time of 57.64, while freshman Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) placed fourth in the 800 meter run with another provisional mark of 2:12.99.

For the Lady Cardinals, sophomore Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) finished fifth in the shot put with a distance of 14.02 meters and eighth in the weight throw with a throw of 15.73 meters.

The SVSU team of junior Diamond Taylor, freshman Ola Hendler (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge HS), freshman Taylor Stepanski and junior Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) also finished third in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:53.39, a new school record.

Men

Junior Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich. / Atherton HS) took home fourth place in the triple jump with a distance of 13.54 meters as freshman Jarius Woolfork (Westland, Mich.) placed fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.93 meters.

Junior Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich. / Linden HS) notched a 14th place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.89, while senior DaJuawn Wallace (Clinton Township, Mich. / Mt. Clemens HS) received a 13th place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.50.

Sophomore Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich. / Western HS) also finished sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.13.

The SVSU team of senior Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.), Lee Chiatalas, Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) and James Walker (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) finished fifth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:25.45.

The Cardinals will be back in action next Friday (Feb. 15) at the Central Michigan University hosted 'Jack Skoog' Open.
