SVSU Women Have Outstanding Performance at GLIAC Championship

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University had a solid showing as they traveled to Hillsdale, Mich. to compete in the two day (Apr. 30 – May 1) GLIAC Outdoor Championships.

For the men, senior Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich.) had two first place finishes in the meet, one in the triple jump with a height of 15.23 meters and in the high jump event including an automatic qualification with a height of 2.17 meters. With his marks in the high jump, Hooper has provisionally qualified for Div. II Nationals. Junior Steve Genther also had a first place showing in the 10,000 meter run with a final time of 9:14.49. Genther also took third place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:54.64.

The Cardinals had a solid showing in the 800 meter run as senior Charlie Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) took second place with a time of 1:53.61 and junior Anthony Filipek (Caro, Mich.) took third at 1:54.23. Senior Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) took fourth place in the shot put event with a distance of 16.21 meters. Junior Ben Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) finished second place in the 1500 meter run with a final time of 3:57.43 while senior Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich.) took fourth with a time of 3:57.83.

Senior Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) took second place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14:99 and third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54:09. Junior Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.) took third place in the 3000 meter steeplechase event with a time of 9:14.49.

Junior Scott Chevalier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took third place in the 100 meter dash at 10:58. The 4x400 relay team of freshman Logan Hebekeusaer (Corunna, Mich.), freshman Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich.), Filipek and Charlie Richards took fifth place with a time of 3:21.65. Freshman Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich.) has provisionally qualified for the Div. II Nationals in the 10,000 meter run after coming in at 32:04.02.

Junior Mark Badowsky (Lincoln, Park, Mich.) finished third overall in the decathlon with a total of 5818 points. Senior Joe Dugall (Clinton Twp., Mich.) took fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 47.12 meters while junior Josh Koglin (Kimball, Mich.) also took fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.74 meters.

On the women’s side, junior Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.) took third place in the 300 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:13.00. Senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) finished fourth place overall in the women’s heptathlon with a total of 3901 points while senior Megan Haskin (Fairview, Mich.) took tenth with a total of 3313 points. Haskin also took sixth place in the javelin throw with a distance of 33.32 meters.

Senior Ashley Morrow (Millington, Mich.) finished fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.99 and eighth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.72. Freshman Samantha Roberts (Bullock Creek, Mich.) took sixth place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.93 while senior Amie Wilson (Linden, Mich.) took seventh with a time of 1:09.24. Roberts would also take eighth in the 800 meter hurdles with a time of 16:35.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Roberts, Morrow, freshman Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich.) and sophomore Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich.) took sixth place with a time of 49.59, while the 4x400 meter relay team including Roberts, Brooks, freshman Kelsey Bartoloni (Southgate, Mich.) and sophomore Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich.) took seventh place with a time of 4:14.06.

Freshman Chelsea Savage (Monroe, Mich.) took seventh place overall in the 10,000 meter run with a final time of 38:17.62, while junior Amber Catlin (Alma, Mich.) took ninth place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:34.73. Senior Christina Ferguson (Athens, Ont.) finished fourth place in the triple jump event with a distance of 10.61 meters.

Sophomore Stacey Westphal (Corunna, Mich.) took fifth place in the pole vault competition with a height of 3.40 meters, while sophomore Kelly Henris (Saginaw, Mich.) took eighth with a height of 3.10 meters.

The Cardinal track team will return to action May 8 as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the Len Paddock Invitational.
