Adriana Barrio Highlights Tennis GLIAC Award with Third First-Team Selection

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced the conference regular season awards on Friday afternoon. Saginaw Valley State University senior Adriana Barrio was selected to the first team All-GLIAC Singles for the third consecutive season. Freshman Nicoletta Diamantopoulos earned All-GLIAC honorable mention.

Barrio finished her final season with the Cardinals competing in the No. 1 Singles spot all season. She finished the year with a 12-8 record overall that includes an impressive 6-2 record in conference play. She was also named the GLIAC women's tennis athlete of the week for the first time in her career at the end of March.

"Adri definitely earned her spot on singles first team. She had to consistently play against the toughest players in the conference," said SVSU Tennis Head Coach Kaylee Tucker. "Adri is a strong competitor and I'm proud of how successful she's been on and off the courts as our senior captain."

Diamantopoulos finished her debut season with SVSU going 13-7 in doubles play and 11-8 in singles competition. She was 5-1 in doubles during GLIAC competition, including a 2-0 mark with Barrio in the No. 1 doubles spot. She also compiled a 6-2 record at No. 4 Singles in league play.

"Nicoletta is such a mature player, especially as a freshman. She knows how to dig herself out of a hole when she's down, and she has come back several times to earn points for the team. I'm excited to see what she accomplishes over the next few years," stated Tucker.

Barrio and Diamantopoulos lead the fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals in postseason play this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. (ET), with a matchup against the fifth-seeded Lake Superior State Lakers in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament at the Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan.
