ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team traveled to Grand Valley State University to compete in the three-day 2024 ITA Regional Championships that wrapped up on Monday, September 16. All seven Cardinals made it through first-round matches, and three battled through the hot weekend, falling in closely contested quarterfinal matches.
Most notably, the freshmen pair of Anastasia Diamantopoulos and Nicoletta Diamantopoulos secured a 1st place win in Flight-B doubles out of 32 teams. The twins are 8-0 for doubles matches this fall.
Lydia Liong also made it to the semi-finals in the Flight-A consolation round, falling in a tough match against Sofia Cardenas from Lewis University 5-7 2-6.
Senior Adriana Barrio was seeded 9th out of 64 players in Flight-A singles. She defeated #6 seed Danijela Danilovic from Northwood University 6-2 6-3, earning her a spot in the quarterfinals. Her performance earned her consideration for an at-large selection of four players from all regional quarterfinalists to be chosen to compete at the ITA nationals in October.
