MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team participated in several matches on Friday and Saturday, September 6-7 at Northwood University to begin their fall slate of competition.

The Cardinals swept Lake Superior State University 6-0 in singles before going on to gain the doubles point the next day.

Freshman twins Anastasia and Nicoletta Diamapoulos won all three of their doubles matches over the weekend, only dropping two games total to opponents.

Saginaw Valley battled in some long matches, resulting in eight third-set tie-breakers over the two days. Senior Adriana Barrio battled back from being down 2-5, winning five straight games to take the first set against LSSU. She also battled back from being down 5-9 in a third set tie-breaker, winning six straight points in a row to secure the match.

Seniors Elizabeth Stuart and Alexis Anthes were the two singles players to earn wins against Tiffin University at six and seven singles. Their scores were 6-3, 4-6 (10-8 in a third set tie-breaker), and 6-1, 6-4 respectively.

Amelia Dickson teamed up with Adriana Barrio to earn their first win of the season at #1 doubles against Northwood University with a score of 6-2. Immediately after, Amelia played through two long singles sets, outlasting LSSU in a 7-6, 7-5 win.

Lydia Liong and Alexis Anthes partnered to secure the #2 doubles win for SVSU against LSSU, officially earning the doubles point for the Cardinals with a 6-4 win. Lydia also played through three long third-set tie-breakers, narrowly dropping two and pulling out a 3-6, 6-0, 10-2 victory against LSSU.

Senior Irene Latorre also traveled with the Cardinals to assist in match preparation and support the team as she recovers from a shoulder injury. Irene played a vital role in mentally prepping the team and cheering them on from the stands. She's hoping to return to play later this season.

The Cardinals are excited for the upcoming ITA tournament where all of them will get a chance to compete.
