CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's swimming & diving team finished up its competition for the weekend at the 2014 Magnus Cup Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State University.
It was a very solid weekend of competition for the Lady Cardinals, as SVSU had every swimmer post a season-best and almost every program record was broken. Rebeca Martinez posted three NCAA Division II B Cuts in the invitational as well, qualifying for the 500 Free, 200 IM and 400 IM.
Martinez competed in the 200 Yard Backstroke and placed in fifth in the A Segment, posting a season-best time of 2:04.80. Shaked Bachar competed in the same event, also recording a season-best mark of 2:14.40 in the C Class.
There were three Lady Cardinals who competed in the 100 Yard Freestyle and had season-best marks. Breanne Bell (55.58), Kaleigh Kovac (56.44) and Melanie Soenksen (56.81) all achieved that feat in the race.
In the 200 Yard Breaststroke, Carley Buechner had a season-best time of 2:27.34 in the prelims and posted a time of 2:28.68 in the finals.
Martinez added a solid finish in the 200 Yard Butterfly, finishing seventh in the A Group with a time of 2:08.24 after having a season-low time of 2:07.72 in the prelims. Katelynn Franczak had a season-best time of 2:35.77 in the prelims as well, shaving over 16 seconds off her previous best time.
Saginaw Valley finished in ninth place in the event, ending with a total of 265 points. The Lady Cardinals have a significant break until they are back in action, returning to the pool in a home event against Kalamazoo College on January 10th. The meet is set to begin at noon at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center on the campus of SVSU.
