Cardinals Draw in Hard Fought Match Against No. 1 Grand Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer program hosted No. 1 Grand Valley State University Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (3-3-1, 1-1-1 GLIAC) tied 0-0 against the Lakers (5-0-2, 2-0-1 GLIAC) as goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz stopped all six shots she faced for her fourth shutout.

Grand Valley outshot the Cardinals 15-1 and 6-0 in shots on goal. The one shot for SVSU came in the first half from Gracie Cwik. Garbarz was tested throughout the match with three saves in both halves. Saginaw Valley had two corner kicks in the first half to match GVSU's, but the Lakers had six more set pieces in the second half.

The first half was more balanced with both teams possessing the ball evenly. Grand Valley generated more chances in the final 45 minutes and their defense didn't allow a shot. Saginaw Valley had a few chances that were taken away as they looked for deep passes to open up Stephanie Strong, but the Lakers' goalkeeper Cailynn Junk pounced on the ball before Strong could record a shot each time.

The Cardinals have tied the Lakers three times in a row going back to both matches last season. The two will meet at Grand Valley in October.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley women's soccer heads up to the Upper Peninsula on Friday, October 4 to play Michigan Tech (3-3-0, 1-2-0 GLIAC) before heading to Northern Michigan (3-2-1, 1-1-0 GLIAC) on Sunday. Those matches are set for 5:00 PM EST and 12:00 PM EST respectively.
