Cardinals Drop Close Match to Open GLIAC Play

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer program hosted Purdue Northwest for their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (2-3-0, 0-1-0 GLIAC) lost 2-1 in a tough and physical battle to the Pride (4-0-1, 1-0-0 GLIAC).

SVSU had a lot of set piece opportunities and took advantage of one for their lone goal. The Cardinals led in corner kicks 6-2 but trailed in shots 8-7 and shots on goal 4-3. Emma Bradley led with three shots while Madi Bajis and Rileigh Garbarz both took two. Two of R. Garbarz and one of Bradley's shots were goal.

PNW took the lead early in the match with a goal from Yoselin Garcia in the ninth minute of play. Garcia received a pass on the left side of the box and her shot deflected off the Cardinal goalkeeper, Lainey Garbarz's, hands and into the top of the goal.

Saginaw Valley knotted the game in the 24th minute off a corner kick. Gabby Green crossed the ball from the corner kick and Rileigh Garbarz delivered a header past the Pride keeper.

Over 21 minutes into the second half, the Pride took the lead again as Nayla Pena scored from the left side of the box to the far-right side of the goal to put PNW up 2-1.

The Cardinals had chances late with corner kicks and free kicks as the Pride had eight fouls in the second half, but they couldn't find the back of the net to tie up the match.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley women's soccer heads to Roosevelt on Sunday, September 22 for a match against the Lakers (0-2-2, 0-1-0 GLIAC). Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM EST from Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill.
