QUINCY, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer program started the 2024 season on the road Quincy University Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (1-0-0) came away with the 1-0 win as Madi Bajis netted the only goal of the match 21 minutes into the first half.
SVSU led the attack in the first half tallying eight shots with six on goal to the Hawks (0-1-0) five shots on goal. QU held the offensive in the second half as they outshot the Cardinals 8-0. SVSU's Lainey Garbarz was up to the task saving all eight shots she faced and earned the clean sheet.
The lone goal from Bajis came off a wonderful give-and-go pass between Bajis and Rileigh Garbarz that gave Bajis a break against the Hawks keeper. She was true with her shot as it entered the bottom left of the net to make it 1-0. Bajis had another shot on goal to lead the Cardinal offense as Stephanie Strong, Alex Richardson, Makenna Kennedy, and Gracie Cwik all had one shot on goal.
The physical play picked up in the second half as SVSU was only called for one foul late in the first half before both teams had six fouls in the final 45 minutes. The Cardinals also led in corner kick opportunities with six to the Hawks three as all six came in the first half of the match.
Cardinal women's soccer continues the road trip on Sunday as they head to Truman State (0-1-0). A 1:00 PM EST start time is set from Kirksville, Missouri at Stokes Stadium before SVSU heads home next weekend.
