UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer tied Grand Valley State University Friday afternoon with a score of 2-2. SVSU scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead before the Lakers clawed back to tie it up in the second half.

Sarah Fredrick opened the scoring in the 14th minute of play. A handball in the defensive box by the Lakers led to a penalty kick. The first attempt was stopped, but the GVSU goalkeeper was called for leaving her line too early and the Cardinals got a second chance. Fredrick stepped up and scored her fifth of the season giving SVSU the 1-0 lead.

Nine minutes later, Saginaw Valley doubled their advantage as Alex Richardson delivered a corner kick into the box and Tiffani Torres got her head on it to direct it past the Laker keeper. Torres got her first of the season and the Cardinals controlled the first half taking the 2-0 lead into the break.

Early in the second half, Grand Valley took advantage of a loose ball off a corner kick and Mackenzie Jones got a shot off into the lower right corner of the net to make it 2-1 SVSU. In the 75th minute, another corner kick for the Lakers found the back of the net. Sophia Morgan took the corner and curled the ball around the near post and in to tie the match up.

The final 15 minutes showed lots of urgency between the Cardinals and Lakers as the two teams are fighting for the top spot in the GLIAC along with Northern Michigan. Both teams pushed for the tiebreaking goal but could not find it.

Stephanie Strong led the offense with five shots, three of them on goal as Fredrick had four shot attempts. Kennedi Pugh stopped 10 of the 12 shots on goal for the Cardinals in her return to goal.

SVSU women's soccer is back in action with senior day Sunday, October 22. They will host Davenport at 1:00 PM with the senior celebration starting at 12:25.
