Win Streak Extended to Four for Women’s Soccer

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer has been on a tear. Four straight wins with three on the road after a dominating 3-0 win over Ferris State Friday afternoon. Along with the win streak, the Cardinals haven't allowed a goal in five games.

SVSU got the scoring going early as Madi Bajis notched her fourth of the year in the 8th minute. Stephanie Strong crossed the ball through the box from the left side and Bajis got position and headed the cross into the bottom right corner of the goal. Strong picked up her GLIAC leading fifth assist of the season.

Saginaw Valley outshot the Bulldogs 12-6 in the first half and held Ferris to only one shot on goal in that time. In the 30th minute, Sarah Fredrick picked up her fourth goal of the season in similar fashion. Kaley Douglass crossed the ball from near the right corner. This time, the ball found its way past the diving FSU keeper and some defenders and Fredrick had a tap in from the far side.

After not being tested much in the first, Lainey Garbarz had some more work in the final 45 minutes. Ferris tallied eight shots and three of them on goal, but Garbarz stopped all of them for her sixth shutout of the year. That mark ties her with Jillian Thompson of Northern Michigan for the GLIAC lead in shutouts. She's also second in goals against average amongst qualifiers and tied for second in wins.

In the second half, Solana Kelly extended the Cardinal lead to three. A SVSU free kick from outside the box found its way into a pack of players. Peyton Kennedy got to it and put a shot towards the goal. Kelly, with her back to the net, redirected the ball with the back of her foot into the goal for her second of the season.

Ferris picked up the physicality and brought the shot totals closer in the second half but couldn't break through offensively. SVSU led in shots 16-14 and FSU led in fouls 13-10 with 10 in the second half. Both teams had four saves as Saginaw Valley led in shots on goal 7-4.

Women's soccer is now 7-2-2 overall with a GLIAC record of 4-1-2, good enough for second in the conference. They return to Saginaw for four games starting with Parkside on Friday. Kickoff between the Cardinals and Rangers is set for 3:00 PM.
