Cardinals Experience First Loss at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team experienced its first loss of 2023 on a road trip to unbeaten Ashland on Friday night. The Cardinals fell into a 2-0 hole in the first half and couldn't make up the deficit before the final horn sounded.

Madi Bajis scored the lone goal for SVSU in the final minute of regulation. Caitlyn Berl registered an assist on the play that cut the Eagle lead to just one goal. Solana Kelly, Sophia Zalucki, Stephanie Strong, and Lauryn Fracassi each registered a shot on goal in the game. Lainey Garbarz (L, 0-1-0) made four saves in net for the Cards.

Ashland broke with a penalty kick at the 6:01 mark of the first half. An insurance goal was added in the 25th minute of play and the score would remain at 2-0 through the first half.

The Cardinal defense stiffened in the second half as they held Ashland scoreless for the remainder of the contest, however, SVSU couldn't capitalize on any opportunities until the goal in the final minute cut the lead in half.

Both teams finished the game with four saves and the shot totals were close as well at 11-7.

The Cardinals will remain in Ohio for a non-conference matchup against Findlay on Sunday, September 10. The opening kick for that game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. It is the second of a four-game road trip for SVSU.
