Cardinal Women’s Soccer Starts 2023 2-0 After 4-2 Win Over Quincy

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and win over Quincy 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (2-0) start the 2023 season with back-to-back wins at home.

Stephanie Strong dished two assists and scored a goal of her own in the game as she led the pace of play offensively for SVSU in the win. Sophia Zalucki, Lauryn Fracassi, and Madi Bajis each tallied a goal on the day. Campbell Gibson added an assist on the game-winning goal that was scored by Strong in the 62nd minute. Sarah Fredrick had a team-high seven shots, four of which were on target. Kennedi Pugh (W, 1-0) made two saves on the afternoon to earn the win in goal for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals held onto the ball 67% of the time during the first half, but the Hawks were able to capitalize on a few of their chances in the opening 45 minutes.

Quincy scored at 6:13 to take an early 1-0 lead. SVSU responded in the 34th minute when Zalucki knotted things up with a goal off a low cross into the box by Strong opening her up to score. Strong added another great pass just a few minutes later as she set up Fracassi for the second Cardinal goal and a 2-1 lead. The Hawks scored in the 37th minute with an unassisted goal that tied the game at two goals apiece as the teams headed to the locker room.

Strong got her own goal in the 62nd minute when Gibson set her up with a pass just outside the box that allowed Strong to beat the Quincy keeper high and right to grab a 3-2 advantage. A penalty kick was awarded in the 83rd minute. Bajis took the kick and scored low right to lock in the 4-2 score that would be the game's final.

The Cardinals will start a four-game road trip on Friday, September 8 at Ashland with an evening game that begins at 6:00 p.m.
