Women’s Golf Sits in Fourth After First Day of GLIAC Championships

AUGUSTA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's golf program started stroke play for the GLIAC Championships at Stonehedge Golf Club North Friday afternoon. The Cardinals sit in fourth out of eight teams after a team score of 312.

SVSU sent five golfers with the best four rounds making up the team score. Megan Thiravong led with a round of 76 to be tied for seventh overall out of 43 golfers. Brook Herbstreit followed with a 77 tying her for 12th. Megan Kozlowski was one stroke behind with a 78 to tie for 17th. Sydney Wesson shot 81 to round out the team score and Mandy Ehrlich shot 83 in round one.

Saginaw Valley posted an average of 3.27 on par threes which tied them for second. The team was fourth best on par fours shooting 13 over with an average of 4.43 and was fifth best on par fives averaging 5.47 strokes per hole. The Cardinals led in total birdies with eight and had 47 pars which put them in fifth. Herbstreit, Thiravong, and Wesson all tied for fourth overall on par threes shooting one over as Herbstreit and Wesson both shot one over on par fours which tied them with several others for fifth best. Thiravong led SVSU with 12 pars and was tied sixth in the tournament. Herbstreit tied with two others for most birdies with three. Wesson had a pair of birdies while Thiravong, Ehrlich, and Kozlowski all had one each.

Women's golf continues stroke play on Friday from Stonehedge Golf Club North on Saturday. The Cardinals are two strokes behind Ferris State in third and one stroke ahead of Wayne State in fifth. Eighteen holes for round two with the top four teams moving onto match play in the afternoon.
