Women’s Basketball Has Most All-GLIAC Team Selections in Over 30 Years

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball had four members named to All-GLIAC teams by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Friday. This is the most All-GLIAC team selections for SVSU women's basketball since four were named in the 1992-93 season. Sophomore Megan McCalla led the GLIAC in scoring, earning First-Team All-GLIAC honors. Senior Aleshia Jones secured Second-Team recognition for the second straight year. Junior Lydia Meredith and senior Saniaa Walker were both named to the Defensive-Team, with Meredith earning the honor consecutively and Walker receiving it for the second time since 2023.

McCalla led the conference in scoring with 482 total points over 29 games for an average of 16.6 points per game. The sophomore forward shot 45.8 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from the three, both of which are slight improvements from her freshman year. Starting in all 29 games for SVSU, McCalla averaged 30.4 minutes, 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, all of which were major jumps from the previous year. The Chelsea, Michigan native posted career highs in every major category including 27 points against Ursuline, eight rebounds three times this year, five three-pointers made against Thomas More, five assists against Grand Valley, and four steals against Walsh

Saginaw Valley women's basketball head coach Jenny Pruett had this to say about McCalla,

"Megan is the definition of hard work. She is constantly asking to watch film, get an extra workout in or get an extra lift in. She has such a strong work ethic, and it is contagious. Megan deserves this honor. As a sophomore she is one of the most dominant scorers in our league. She has three levels and is only getting better."

Jones transferred to SVSU last season and has made the Second-Team list both years as a Cardinal. In her senior campaign, Jones averaged 14.6 points per game to sit fourth in the conference. Starting in all 29 games, she led the team in minutes played averaging 31.3. The native of Leavenworth, Kansas led the GLIAC in free throw percentage knocking down 89.1 percent of her shots from the charity stripe, a nearly 16 percent increase from last year. The senior guard also averaged 4.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. She recorded career highs in minutes played with 39 against Michigan Tech and assists with four, doing the latter twice in 2024-25.

Pruett said this about Jones,

"As a senior captain, Aleshia has been driven all year to make a difference on our team. She has proven to be a top scorer on our conference and has stepped up in so many games and led us during adverse circumstances. She is a great leader and I'm so proud of the player she became in just two years with our program."

Meredith and Walker showcased some of the best defense in the conference and Pruett said this about the pair,

"Lydia and Saniaa are two of the most tenacious defenders in our league. Whenever we needed a stop, we always turned to these two and they would come up with a big steal or force a turnover."

Meredith was third in the GLIAC in steals averaging 2.6 per game. The Portland, Michigan native also saw a major growth in her three-point shooting percentage. Meredith shot 33.3 percent from beyond the arc, up nearly 21 percent from her 12.5 in 2023-24. The junior guard led the team in assists averaging 3.3 per game to tie for sixth best in the conference. Meredith also averaged 7.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 30.8 minutes per game as an everyday starter. She set career highs in nearly every category including 20 points at Roosevelt, 12 rebounds against Roosevelt at home, three three-pointers made on six attempts against Ferris State, six assists six different times this year, eight steals against Ursuline, and two blocks on three different occasions.

Pruett had this to say about Meredith,

"Lydia always had a mind for defense. She is a smart defender, quick and strong. Her defense has led to our offensive production many times. She is nonstop on D, and it is contagious for our team."

Walker makes the Defensive-Team list for the second time tying for fifth in the GLIAC in steals averaging 2.3 per game. The Flint, Michigan native started every game for SVSU averaging 26.3 minutes played, 5.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. The senior guard posted her best offensive season with the Cardinals shooting 38.6 percent from the floor and 22.0 percent from three, a nearly 15 percent increase in three-point shooting from last year. In her fourth year with the program, she posted career highs in nearly every category as well. Walker totaled 38 minutes at Wayne State where she scored 19 points on nine made field goals, all being career bests. She also hit double-digit boards with 10 against Lake Superior State.

Pruett said this about Walker,

"Saniaa has always been our defensive stopper. She is usually on the point guard making it hard for them to make decisions because of her defensive pressure. We played off her energy and she never gave anything less than her best."

Women's basketball landed the seventh seed in the GLIAC tournament with two wins to end the regular season. The Cardinals fell in the first round to Northern Michigan to end the 2024-25 season.
