Cardinals Fall on the Road to Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program went back on the road for away game number four in their last five and battled against Parkside Thursday night. The Cardinals (10-9, 4-7 GLIAC) fell to the Rangers (12-6, 7-4 GLIAC) with a final score of 73-50.

Aleshia Jones led SVSU with 12 points and six rebounds. Megan McCalla put up 10 points as the only other double-digit scorer for Saginaw Valley. Lydia Meredith and Jones both tallied five steals as the Cardinals had 13 in total. As a team, SVSU shot 29.5% from the floor as UWP shot 51.9%. Saginaw Valley was outrebounded 41-30 as well.

There was one tie and no lead changes throughout the game as Parkside scored the first bucket, McCalla tied the game 2-2 with a layup, and then a 6-0 Ranger run put UWP ahead for good in the first quarter. Jones and Meredith cut into the lead late in the first with a Jones jumper and a layup plus two free throws by Meredith to make it 19-12 Parkside. Jones and Ava Locklear brought it to a five-point game. An offensive explosion by Parkside pushed it to a 15-point lead and took the game to halftime up 35-22.

The home team continued to keep Saginaw Valley at arms reach throughout the third. Maggie Keinsley hit a pair of threes to try to build momentum for the Cardinals, but the Rangers answered with threes and free throws as they led by 18 going into the fourth. Jones, McCalla, and Meredith hit consecutive shots with Meredith's coming from beyond the arc, bringing the score to 61-45. Parkside responded and took a 23-point lead, 68-45 before taking the victory by the same deficit.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley heads to Hammond, Indiana Saturday afternoon to face Purdue Northwest. The Cardinals defeated the Pride 80-56 at home earlier this season and look to get back in the win column as they battle through the second half of conference play. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM EST from John Friend Court.
