HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program traveled to the Upper Peninsula Thursday evening to play Michigan Tech. The Cardinals (8-7, 2-5 GLIAC) fell to the Huskies (6-9, 3-4 GLIAC) with a final score of 84-46.
Saginaw Valley was out shot 60.3% from the floor to 26.6% as Michigan Tech's scoring was too much. The rebounding and turnover game was close as SVSU was behind with four rebounds 39-35 and turned the ball over two more times than MTU, 20-18. Megan McCalla led with nine points with Lydia Meredith directly behind with eight and Saniaa Walker and Ava Locklear with seven each. Locklear also led with seven rebounds while Aleshia Jones had a game-high four steals.
The Cardinals battled in the first trading leads. McCalla started with three free throws before a Meredith layup tied the game 5-5. The two teamed up with more layups to put SVSU ahead 11-8. A 9-0 run gave the Huskies the lead and they wouldn't trail for the remainder of the contest. The second quarter had been rough for Michigan Tech this season but that wasn't the case against Saginaw Valley. MTU outscored SVSU 24-8 to take a 41-21 lead into halftime.
The final two quarters both went the Huskies way extending their lead by eight and 10. At the tail end of the third, Maggie Keinsley and Walker both made layups to cut into the lead before the final frame. A three from Keinsley and Jones along with a Locklear layup in the fourth allowed the Cardinals to chip away at the lead, but Michigan Tech had the answer. A 6-2 run in the final minutes gave MTU their largest lead of 38 and the final score of 84-46.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley looks to shake off the loss and continues the road trip. The Cardinals take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM EST from Vandement Arena in Marquette, Michigan.
