NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program traveled to Walsh Tuesday evening. The Cardinals (4-2) fell in a close fight to the Cavaliers (4-2) with a final score of 64-58.
SVSU had three scorers tied with a game high 17 points along with one Cavalier. Aleshia Jones, Megan McCalla, and Ava Locklear all posted 17 points, a career-high for Locklear. McCalla also had a career-high in steals with four and tied a career-high in rebounds with eight.
As a team, the Cardinals shot 43.1% from the floor but were outrebounded by one, 35-34, and outshot from the three 36.4% to 13.3%. The game saw five lead changes and three ties as Walsh had the lead for 52% of the game and SVSU had it for 43%.
Saginaw Valley started with a 6-0 run as Jones had a pair of free throws and a layup with McCalla laying in a shot as well. A Saniaa Walker three pushed the lead to seven while the Cavaliers fought back. A McCalla free throw and Jones jumper gave the Cardinals a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter showcased the lowest scoring. Two threes for Walsh gave them the lead before two free throws for Lydia Meredith claimed the small advantage back for SVSU. A bucket each left the game at a 27-26 lead for SVSU at the half.
Another pair of threes took the lead early in the third for the Cavaliers. A trio of free throws and a layup extended their lead to 37-33 before another three for Walsh pushed their lead to five late in the quarter. A turn around jumper from Locklear cut it to 42-39 before the final 10 minutes.
In the final frame, the Cavaliers used free throws to keep the Cardinals away. The lead slowly grew to nine points before a late push by Saginaw Valley cut it to five, 63-58. A free throw for Walsh ended the scoring as they took the home victory.
