DETROIT -- Taking on Wayne State University on Thursday (Jan. 23) in GLIAC play, the Cardinal Women's Basketball team fell by a final score of 74-64 in Detroit. Saginaw Valley got double-digit scoring from three players, including a career-high 17 points from senior guard Mariah Cook.

SVSU falls to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the GLIAC while Wayne State is now 10-8 and 4-6 in the league. 

The Cards had a solid opening quarter, taking an 18-14 lead into the second frame. Cook hit on 3-of-4 shots for the visitors for eight first quarter points. 

In the second quarter, the Warriors put up 20 points to Saginaw Valley's eight, taking the lead and a 34-26. 

There were 20 more points scored by WSU in the third quarter, as the home team outscored SVSU 20-14 to increase its lead to 54-40. Kaitlyn Zarycki had seven points in the third quarter and Cook added another five. 

Saginaw Valley outscored the Warriors by a 24-20 count in the fourth but Wayne State was able to maintain and close-out for a 10-point win, 74-64.

• Cook finished 5-for-12 shooting and 3-for-7 from three-point range for a career-best 17 points. She added two rebounds and two steals in the contest while being named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
• Zarycki had a game-high 18 points with three boards, three steals and an assist.
• Maddie Maloney added a dozen points with five rebounds and three helpers. 
• Tyler Scheid grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored six points.
• Kaitlyn Geers added seven points and five boards for Saginaw Valley. 
• WSU had a 42-8 edge in bench scoring in the game. 
• The Cards hit on just 18-of-32 tries at the foul line in the game.
