Women's Basketball drops 57-42 home matchup to #4 Grand Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women's Basketball team hosted the No. 4 team in the nation on Saturday (Jan. 18) in the Grand Valley State University Lakers. Despite holding a lead after one quarter of play, SVSU was not able to maintain and ended up losing to the Lakers by a final score of 57-42.

SVSU is now 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC. GVSU improves to 16-1 and 8-1 in the league. 

The first quarter was a closely-contested one where offense came at a premium. Saginaw Valley held tight defensively and led by an 8-5 score. Six of those points came from Mariah Cook, who got the start for the Cards. 

Grand Valley outscored SVSU 22-12 in the second quarter and would take a 27-20 edge into the halftime break. Half of those 12 points in the second came from Maddie Barrie and another four from Kaitlyn Zarycki.

The Lakers posted a 15-9 edge in the third frame and carried a 42-29 lead into the fourth quarter. Zarycki tacked-on another five points for the home team in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, GV had a narrow 15-13 edge and was able to close-out for a 15-point victory at 57-42. Zarycki led the way in the fourth as well offensively, scoring six more points.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Zarycki registered her first career double-double, netting 15 points with a career-best 10 rebounds. She added four steals and an assist as well to earn Meijer "Player of the Game honors. Both figures were game-highs as well.
  • Barrie finished with eight points and four boards.
  • Cook ended up with six points, four rebounds and three assists.

Saginaw Valley is back in action next on Thursday (Jan. 23) when it travels to play at Wayne State University. Tip-off for that contest is slated for 5:30 p.m.
