Cardinals defeat the Tiffin Dragons 78-57

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team took down the Tiffin Dragons, 78-57, in a nonconference matchup. With the win the Cardinals improve to 4-2 overall in the 2019 season. The Cardinals opened play against Tiffin, outscoring their opponent, 37-31, at the halftime break. Saginaw Valley continued to outscore the Dragons through the second half of play and would ultimately win, 78-57. 

The first quarter opened with back-and-forth scoring between the Cardinals and the Dragons until Tiffin took a four point lead, 11-7. SVSU would respond by going on a nine point run to end the first quarter with a 14-18 lead. Maddie Barrie and teammate Ashley Buchholz led the offensive attack with five points each. Maddie Maloney and Kyndall Spires both tacked-on six points in the second quarter for SV as the Cardinals led, 37-31, at the half. The Cards showed consistency in their shooting output as they shot above 40% in 3/4 quarters.

The Cardinals scored the most points in the third quarter, 27-10, over the Dragons and Kaitlyn Zarycki led SVSU in scoring with 13 of her 22 points. The Cardinals showcased their shooting in the third quarter recording a shooting percentage of 52.9%.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals buckled down defensively and closed the fourth quarter, 78-57. Zarycki was the point leader in the fourth quarter with seven points and the Cardinals collectively earned 12 rebounds.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Kaitlyn Zarycki had a team-high and career-high 22 points and added seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block in the win.
  • Barrie, Maloney, and Spires were all in double digit scoring with 10 across the board.
  • Spires had six boards for the Cardinals and was 2/2 from 3-point territory.
  • SVSU shot 45.2% from the field while Tiffin was 29.5%. 
  • The Cardinals out-rebounded the Dragons 50-34.
