Cardinals Drop Opener at Michigan Tech in Thursday Night GLIAC Action

Houghton, Mich. — The Saginaw Valley State Women's Basketball team opened up GLIAC play on Thursday (Nov. 30) evening, starting a weekend trip to the U.P. at the No. 18 team in the nation in the Michigan Tech Huskies. After a tough night shooting from the floor, the Cardinals couldn't maintain and would fall to the Huskies by a final count of 59-37 at Tech's SDC Gymnasium. 

Michigan Tech led by a 10-4 score after the opening 10 minutes of play but the Cardinals would keep things withing single digits after going for 12 points in the second quarter and holding the Huskies to 15. The halftime score stood at 25-16 with Tech in the lead.  

The Huskies distanced the count a bit, posting a 19-7 edge in the third quarter to push the lead out to 44-23 after shooting at a 64.3% clip from the floor in that 10 minute segment. 

The Cardinals had their best offensive output of the game with 14 points in the final quarter, but that would not prove to be enough as Tech tacked-on 15 more and would close-out for the 22-point win at 59-37.  

Inside the Boxscore:

  • Laurel Jacqmain reached double-digits for the fourth time of the season, coming just one point shy of her career-high. She posted a team-best 12 points, adding four rebounds and a steal while earning Meijer "Player of the Game" honors. 
  • Anna Hall added five points wiht four boards.
  • Kierra Crockett grabbed a team-high six rebounds, marking a new career-high for her in just her seventh contest.
  • Hannah Settingsgaard had a game-high three steals and added a pair of blocks. 
  • Tech owned a 34-14 edge in points in the paint while holding just a narrow 38-36 advantage on the glass.

Up Next...

The Cardinals will continue weekend play with a Saturday (Dec. 2) afternoon matchup against Northern Michigan University. Tip-off is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Berry Events Center.
