UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field teams competed at the Fast Break Athletics Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 11-12, hosted by Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Xavier Santiago led the way for the Cardinals as he won the high jump after clearing the bar at 2.14m to hit an NCAA DII Provisional mark and also set a new personal best for himself in the event. Santiago joins teammate Sawyer Moloy in the top five in all D2 with his leap, as he is now ranked fifth.
Noah Shaw highlighted a strong showing from the SVSU throwers at the meet. Shaw was second in the hammer with his toss of 50.44m. Shaw was third in the discus with a PR of 46.16m and fifth in the shot put at 14.63m. Lukas Ray was second in the shot put with a throw of 15.91m and seventh in the discus with a mark of 42.61m. He also set a PR in the hammer at 38.33m. Nolan Berg added another top-five showing with a third-place finish in the shot put with a 15.49m.
Janae Hudson led the women's throws with three top-five performances that included to PR marks. Hudson was fourth in the shot put with a measurement of 12.40m. Her fourth-place hammer throw of 44.15m was a PR, as was her fifth-place discus launch of 36.55m. Abby Karst and Raine Redding recorded PRs as well. Karst got hers in the javelin with a 30.33m, while Redding's came in the hammer with a 32.85m.
All four relay teams for Saginaw Valley State were in the top four. The women's 4x400 team of Taylor Moyer, Sophia Thelen, Madisyn Lundquist, and Jenna Picard were second after a time of three minutes and 59.72 seconds. The 4x100 team with Moyer, Chaniya Madison, Trinity Greer, and Thelen placed third with a 47.72. On the men's side, both relay teams placed third, with the 4x100 team of Trevor Culpepper, Quin Broussard, Jordon Brown, and Kabanu Witherspoon finishing in 41.53. The 4x400 team of Witherspoon, Ryan Mixon, Broussard, and Brown crossed the finish at 3:17.03.
Three Cardinals placed third, with Madisyn Lundquist being the lone women's athlete with her showing in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 3.45m. Culpepper set a new PR in the 100m after clocking in a time of 10.53. Nick Bozarth got third in the steeplechase with a time of 9:22.67.
Grace Collett finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with a PR of 14.33. Collett also grabbed a PR in the 200m with a time of 26.94. Jacob Walker set a new PR in the 5K with a time of 14:18.70 to place fourth in the race. Nate Niederquell was the final top-five finisher for the Cardinals with fourth in the 400 hurdles after a time of 56.84.
