EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field team competed in the Michigan State Spartan Invite on Friday. The men's team had five top-three finishes and 12 top-five showings. The women's team had two top-five performers and four new personal best marks.
Sawyer Moloy led the way for the Cardinals with a win in the high jump after he cleared the bar at 2.18m. That mark ties his PR in the event and breaks the SVSU outdoor record by a quarter of an inch. It is also an NCAA provisional mark.
Kenny Lewis set a PR in the 800m with his time of one minute, 53.20 seconds to earn second in the race. The SVSU 4x100 relay team of Trevor Culpepper, Quin Broussard, Jordon Brown, and Kabanu Witherspoon was second with a finish of 40.99 seconds which also breaks the SVSU outdoor record in that event. Noah Shaw and Nolan Berg recorded second place in throws. Shaw was second in the hammer with a heave of 49.02m and fifth in the shot put with a mark of 15.18m. Berg placed second in the discus with a PR of 46.55m. He also finished fourth in the shot put with a best toss of 15.23m.
Xavier Santiago was the lone third-place finisher after clearing the high jump bat at 1.98m.
Nate Niederquell and Witherspoon placed fourth in their respective events. Niederquell finished the 400 hurdles in 55.73, while Witherspoon timed at 22.26 in the 200m. The 4x400 relay team, consisting of Kenny Lewis, Jaron Wyma, Bryce Husen, and Shane Siterlet, was fourth with a time of 3:33.00.
Landon Mars was the final top-five performer on the men's side with a fifth-place finish in the 3000 steeplechase. His time of 10:11.52 in the race was a PR. On the women's side, Aubree Sedore was fifth in the 800m after crossing the finish line in 2:30.39. She was joined by Grace Collett as the two top-five finishes for the Cardinals after she set a new PR in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.44.
Three Cardinal women's athletes earned seventh place on the afternoon, with Taylor Moyer and Kayla McIntyre setting new PRs with their finishes. Moyer tallied a time of 26.23 in the 200m, while McIntyre set hers in the 1,500m at 5:15.51. Janae Hudson also finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 12.44m. Hudson tallied a new PR in the discus at 36.53m, which was good enough to finish in the top 10.
Olivia Carpenter was the final woman's PR with her time of 14.84 in the 100 hurdles.
