UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field team began the indoor season with the annual SVSU Holiday Classic at home on Friday and Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals boasted five first-place finishes in the season debut including four from the men and one for the women.
Five women's runners completed the 5K in the top 10. Jenna Picard won the race at 17:31.81. Karissa Picard finished second after a finish of 137:43.00. Jenna Sweeney was third at 18:26.65. Lili Lehnst and Tara Szuper were seven and eight with times of 18:47.66 and 18:56.67.
Olivia Carpenter finished the 60 hurdles with a 9.20 to place fourth in the final race. She also placed fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.22. The 4x400m relay team consisting of Sophia Thelen, Madisyn Lundquist, Trinity Greer, and Alicia Fields placed fourth with a time of 4:00.82. The "B" relay team of Taylor Moyer, Makayla Fuerst, Mallory Farmer, and Tori Henson placed sixth with a time of 4:07.02.
Clara Krupp placed seventh in the mile with a time of 5:33.35.
Emelia MacDonald was eight with a time of 11:14.98.
Sophia Thelen placed ninth in the 60 with a time of 7.84. Makayla Fuerst was ninth in the 400m after a finish of 1:02.29, and Kayla McIntyre took ninth in the mile at 5:41.41.
Janae Hudson threw 11.75m in the shot put to place 10th in the event.
On the men's side, Kenny Lewis won the 800m with a time of 1:55.22 and the mile with a finish of 4:15.80. Lewis was second in the 800 with a final time of 1:55.22. Sawyer Moloy won the men's high jump after clearing the bar at 1.98m and finished fifth in the long jump with a best mark of 6.59m.
The Cardinals had six runners finish in the top 10 of the one mile including Lewis who won the race. Bryce Husen placed third in the mile after clocking a 4:17.35. Corey Bowers was fourth in the mile with a time of 4:17.98. He finished one spot ahead of Shane Siterlet who crossed the finish at 4:18.27. Landon Mars was seventh at 4:20.17 and Jaron Wyma was ninth after a finish of 4:23.89.
Like the one-mile race, SVSU dominated the 5K with six runners finishing in the top 10. Nick McArdle won with a time of 14:29.59. Jacob Walker was second (14:35.34), Jack Lobodzinski third (14:43.67), and Noah Verlinde fourth (14:59.60). Lukas Kriesch registered sixth with a time of 15:02.52 and Nick Bozarth was 10th with 15:28.36.
Matthew Canales placed third in the 800m with a finish of 1:55.57, while Lukas Ray tallied third in the shot put after his best throw of 15.84m.
Trevor Culpepper finished fourth in the 200m with a time of 22.01. Preston Kelsey placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.62m.
Nolan Berg was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 15.33m and Noah Shaw was ninth with 14.95m.
Husen also claimed a seventh-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:57.98.
