Cheyenne Nesbitt and Sam Black Compete for Team USA in Thorpe Cup

WETZLAR, GERMANY – Saginaw Valley State University alums Cheyenne Nesbitt and Sam Black competed for Team USA versus Germany in the 2024 Thorpe Cup on Friday and Saturday, July 20-21. The women's team fell 17.901-17.839 in a tight contest. The men's team was victorious 39.065-37.472. Nesbitt placed seventh overall in the women's heptathlon with a final score of 5.789, but she did not contribute to the overall team score. Black scored 7.845 points as the third athlete in the Team USA men's win.

Nesbitt won the high jump with a mark of 1.74m. She had a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.35 seconds and fourth in the 200m with a time of 24.28. The 10-time NCAA Division II National Champion placed seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:19.17, and ninth in both the shot put (12.75m) and javelin (36.04m). She was 10th in the long jump with a leap of 5.58m.

Black won the shot put with a throw of 15.47m and tallied four other top-five finishes with two second-place finishes in the high jump (2.00m) and javelin (55.11m). He was fourth in the 100 with a time of 10.88 seconds and fifth in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 4.60m. Black placed sixth in the discus after a best throw of 41.98m. He had two seventh-place performances in the long jump with a 7.13m and 110 hurdles with a time of 14.77 seconds. Black finished his 10 events with eighth in the 1500 (4:52.31) and 11th in the 400 with 49.31.
