Cardinals Break Four School Records on First Day of NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships

EMPORIA, KAN. – Three Saginaw Valley State University outdoor track and field records were broken on day one of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

Cheyenne Nesbitt got the day started by setting records in the 100m hurdles and the high jump portion of the Heptathlon. Her time of 13.09 in the 100 hurdles was enough to win the race, while her high jump height of 1.78m earned her second. She threw the shot put 13.72m to finish first. She placed second in the 200m with a time of 24.25 seconds. Nesbitt leads the overall standings with 3,796 points with four more events to take place on day two.

Nesbitt was a part of another school record as she anchored the 4x100 relay team with Sophia Thelen, Alona Olshevska, and Angelina Delbosque. The quartet finished the first round of the relay with a new record time of 45.08 seconds to finish eighth and advance to the final round on Saturday.

Olshevska set the fourth school record of the day with her 53.16-second finish in the 400m. That time placed her fourth in the first round and she will race in the finals scheduled for Saturday.

Alexa Keiser finished sixth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:39.57 to qualify for the final race on day two of the competition.

Dominic Suliman qualified for the finals of the 1500m race after a finish of 3:52.58 placing him eighth in the first round overall standings.

Ryan Brenner was the final SVSU athlete to compete for the day as he finished half of the Decathlon to open the meet. He had a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.68m and was top-10 in the 400m (7th, 50.01) and the high jump (8th, 1.89m). He currently sits in 12th with the final five events taking place tomorrow (May 25) beginning with the 110m hurdles at 10:30 AM EST.

Brenner will complete the decathlon on Friday, May 24 beginning at 10:30 AM EST. Nesbitt looks to claim her fourth-straight National Title in the Heptathlon with the final four events starting with the long jump at 11:30 AM EST. Nesbitt will also compete in the 100m hurdle first round in the evening. Keiser will run in the steeplechase finals scheduled for 8:30 PM EST. Trinity Greer, Cassie Campbell, Olshevska, and Nesbitt will race in heat three of the first round of the 4x400 relay beginning at 9:10 PM EST.
