NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: Cardinals to Send Six Athletes to NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University Track and Field team will send six athletes to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colorado. Colorado State University will serve as the host for the championships. The championships will take place from May 25-27.

 

WOMEN'S TEAM PARTICIPANTS

Lauren Buckner – 1500m Run

The senior looks to cap off her record-breaking career in the 1500m run. Buckner currently holds the school record in the event and will look to etch her name deeper with the greats of SVSU Track and Field.

Alexa Keiser – 3000m Steeplechase

Although it is her first season competing in the event, Keiser has taken the challenge head-on. Qualifying for the NCAA National Meet after only competing in the event a handful of times. She set her best mark of the season with a time of 10:28.35 five days ago at the Oakland Last Chance Meet which is what propelled her to be able to compete this week.

Cheyenne Williamson – 100m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Heptathlon

Williamson is the defending national champion in the Heptahlon and was ranked as high as third in the country this season in the event after only competing in it once in Azusa, California. She will look to defend her title in the event while also picking up crucial points for the team in her other three events. She also holds the school records in the 100m hurdles and high jump with marks set at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships this season. Williamson, as a Junior, has already solidified herself as a Cardinal great and will compete to expand her legacy over the program.

 

MEN'S TEAM PARTICIPANTS

Ryan Brenner – Decathlon

Brenner heads into the event with a top score of 6991 this season which was set at the Bryan Clay Invitational in mid-April. Brenner, a freshman, sprung onto the scene this season in the multi-events and will be in the hunt for a promising finish on the national stage.

Trevin Phillips – Javelin Throw

Phillips is the current school record holder in the Javelin Throw which is being used as his seed mark for the national stage. His heave of 64.51m (211' 8") has allowed him to compete at the highest level all season. Phillips took second place at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships just two weeks ago.

Andrew Quinn – Shot Put

Quinn is the current school record holder in the shot put with a mark of 18.45m (60' 10") at the GLIAC Championships two weeks ago. Quinn, a freshman, has steadily improved in the event throughout the season and has been continually amongst the top throwers in the conference.
