MARION, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University Track and Field teams traveled to Indiana Wesleyan University and kicked off their outdoor campaign for the 2023 season during a two-day invitational on March 24 and 25. The Cardinals looked to build on a strong finish to their indoor season last month at the GLIAC Championships.
On the field events, side of the meet Andrew Quinn won his flight but placed fourth overall in the discus with a toss of 42.58 meters. Quinn added to his afternoon by winning the shotput by .32 meters and was joined by Clarence Corbett and Nolan Berg who finished third and fourth place respectively. MacKenzie Ramey joined the flock with a second-place finish in the shotput as well throwing 12.08m. Ramey also placed third in the hammer throw. Trevin Phillips kicked off the season with a huge win in the javelin, winning the event by over 12 meters. Freshman, Autumn Morris started her outdoor career as a Cardinal with a third-place finish in the triple jump, leaping 11.03m.
For the track events, Noah Verlinde finished third overall in arguably one of the toughest races in outdoor track and field, the 3000m steeple. The women's 4x100 relay team consisting of Morris, Delbosque, Greer, and Moyer took the crown running 48.32 seconds. Angelina Delbosque added to her afternoon with a third-place finish in the 400m run finishing her race in 1:02.76. Kabanu Witherspoon added to the 400m medalists with a third-place finish running 53.29 seconds. Alex Stoll placed third in the 110m hurdles for the men's team finishing his race in 16.08 seconds. Makayla Fuerst was crowned the 400m hurdle champion of the meet coming out of heat two for a first-time outdoor win for the freshman, she won the event by four-hundredths of a second and finished with a time of 1:09.73. Seth Oxer made the clean sweep for SVSU in the 400m hurdles winning his race by over 1.5 seconds and finishing with a time of 56.95. Sophia Thelen and Taylor Moyer took second and third place in the 200m dash for the women's team finishing with times of 26.83 and 27.46 respectively. Quin Broussard was the medalist for the 200m dash running a 23.78 (-3.3 for wind).
The highlight of the meet came from the Men's distance squad in the 5000m run where the Cardinals place five of the top six runners. Thomas Hufton led the way for SVSU finishing in 14:53.43 and was followed by Carson Hersch (2nd), Samuel Deardorff (3rd), Joseph Caroul (4th), and Jack Lobodzinski (6th).
