UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track & field team kicked of 2016 with the SVSU Classic, hosted by the Cardinals in the Fieldhouse on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. Both teams posted several first place finishes.
Allison Dorr finished in first place in the one mile run, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:19.20. Dominique Adams finished the race with a time of 5:25.49, landing at fifth place.
In the men's one mile run, the Cardinals took second, third and fourth place. Eddie Komph took second with a time of 4:18.91, followed by Tom Goforth in third at 4:20.62 and Joey Southgate in fourth with 4:22.92.
Bria Williams posted another first place finish for the Cardinals in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.96. D'Omar took the top place finish in the men's 60 meter hurdles as well and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships, recording a time of 8.20.
DeAnna Stickler-Gatson crossed the finish line first in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 58.57.
Dominque Smith finished second in the 60 meter dash, recording a time of 7.84.
Emily Short and Alicia Tomlin took first and second in the 800 meter run, respectively. Short posted a time of 2:19.00, followed by Tomlin at 2:21.00.
Ce'Aira Richardson posted a time of 25.38 in the 200 meter dash, taking first place for Saginaw Valley.
Tori Peet recorded a third place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:48.47.
Saginaw Valley's 4x400 meter relay team of Ola Hendler, DeAnna Stickler-Gatson, Sidney Bischer and Lina Davis came in first with a time of 4:01.14.
In the field events, Emerald Joiner finished third and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the women's weight throw with a final distance of 16.42 meters. Joiner also provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships and took first place in the shot put event, throwing 13.89 meters.
Robert Atwater provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the men's long jump and took first place with a jump of 7.16 meters. Robert Tarpley took second, posting a distance of 6.95 meters, followed by Broderick Flynn in third with a distance of 6.92 meters. Tarpley also took second in the men's triple jump, marking a final distance of 13.91 meters.
Atwater provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships a second time in the high jump and landed in first place, crossing the bar at a height of 2.08 meters. He also took third in men's pole vault, with a final height of 4.41 meters.
Devin Hartnagle finished first and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships for the second time this season in the men's weight throw, posting a distance of 17.80 meters.
Anna Fochesato took first in the women's triple jump event, recording a distance of 11.36 meters.
Ryan Kelley recorded a distance of 15.53 meters in men's shot put, taking third place for Saginaw Valley. Ben Morrow followed in fourth place, throwing a 14.82 meter shot.
The Cardinals return to the oval on January 22nd, when they host the SVSU "Doug Hansen". The start time for field events begins at 2:30 pm in the SVSU Fieldhouse.
